Glycerine is a clear, thick liquid used in moisturisers, lotions, soaps and some medicines. It is also called glycerol, and the two names describe the same substance. On skin it acts as a humectant, a type of ingredient that draws in and holds water.

Neither label gives a measured quantity. The gel label says to apply liberally as often as necessary. The ointment label says to apply as needed.
How do you apply glycerine on the face and body?

Moisturising products are generally applied to skin that has just been washed and dried.
The NHS[9] advises applying an emollient as soon as the skin has been patted dry, so that it is absorbed properly. It also advises smoothing the product on rather than rubbing it in, following the direction of hair growth. That helps stop hair follicles becoming blocked.
The NHS also says it is especially important to apply an emollient to the hands and face, because they are more exposed than the rest of the body.

How long can glycerine be used?

What side effects can glycerine cause?

The phase 3 trial of the glycerol and paraffin cream recorded irritation or erythema in 2.1% of patients. Worsened itching affected 1.3%, and blisters at the site of application 0.9%. The crossover trial in fabric workers reported no adverse effects among its 32 participants.

Why glycerine is kept away from the eyes
Both DailyMed glycerin labels carry an eye warning. The glycerin 40% ointment label states that the product should not get into the eyes. The gel label advises avoiding contact with them.

Who should be careful with glycerine?

Very young children, deep wounds and serious burns are the situations these labels single out.

Does glycerine appear in medicines as well as cosmetics?
Yes. Glycerol is also used as an excipient in medicines.
The EMA’s annex on excipients in labelling[10] lists glycerol, also written as E422, by route of administration. For an oral medicine the threshold is 10 g per dose. Above that, the leaflet states that glycerol may cause headache, stomach upset and diarrhoea.
For a rectal medicine the threshold is 1 g, with a note that glycerol may have a mild laxative effect.
That annex covers glycerol swallowed or given rectally. It carries no cutaneous entry, so it says nothing about glycerine applied to skin.
Glycerine in Indian cosmetic and drug rules
Most glycerine products sold for skin in India are regulated as cosmetics rather than as medicines.
CDSCO[11] gives the definition of a cosmetic under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. It covers anything applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness or altering the appearance.
Manufacture is licensed by State Licensing Authorities, and imports are registered by the Central Licensing Authority under the Cosmetics Rules, 2020.
